In 1983, San Marcos/Hays County E.M.S. (SM/HCEMS) was formed by the City of San Marcos and Hays County as a 501(c)3 not for profit corporation to provide both emergency and non-emergency E.M.S. services.  The organization is overseen by a Board of Directors.The original service area included the Cities of San Marcos, Kyle, Niederwald, Mountain City and a large part of the unincorporated areas of the County. In 2001, SM/HCEMS contracted to provide E.M.S. services to Hays County Emergency Service District #2 in the Buda area, until the Buda Fire Department assumed operations in the fall of 2010.
