San Marcos Hays County EMS currently employees 78 full time highly qualified EMTs and Paramedics that provide high quality patient care in Hays County, Texas. The department currently operates seven ALS ambulances (24/7) and four peak demand (12 hr) units. The call volume is approaching 15,000 per year with 9,000 transports. Candidates who do well here enjoy the friendly atmosphere, support from management, the challenging rural to urban environments, and the opportunities afforded by the third largest EMS department in the Austin metropolitan area.
New employees participate in a mandatory two-week recruit academy. After the academy, recruits participate in five shifts of system orientation and thirty shifts of third-person orientation and training before being released to function as the second member of a crew. New employees serve a six month probationary period and must pass a final ghost phase and exam before being cleared to independent duty.

Candidates must turn in a copy of their Texas EMS certification to be considered. The process consists of a Chief interview board, written test, and certification-appropriate skills testing. Candidates given a conditional offer of employment must submit a copy of their driver’s license, a certified copy of their driving record (obtained within the previous 30 days), and pass a background check, physical exam, and drug screen prior to hire.
