San Marcos Hays County EMS currently employs 96 full time highly qualified EMTs and Paramedics that provide high-quality patient care in Hays County, Texas. The department currently operates nine MICU ambulances (24/7) and five peak demand (12 hr) units. The call volume is approaching 17,000 per year with 10,000 transports. New employees participate in a mandatory four-week recruit academy. After the academy, recruits participate in five shifts of system orientation and thirty shifts of third-person orientation and training before being released to function as the second member of a crew. New employees serve a one-year probationary period and must pass an oral credentialing with the medical director before being cleared to independent duty.
The process consists of an interview board, and certification-appropriate skills testing. Candidates given a conditional offer of employment must submit a copy of their driver’s license, a certified copy of their driving record (obtained within the previous 30 days), and pass a background check, physical exam, and drug screen prior to hire.
Salary and Benefits
EMT’s starting salary is approximately $60,720 annually based on a 56 hour work week, excluding extra shifts and mandatory education. Up to $66,493 with experience.
AEMT’s starting salary is approximately $66,793 annually based on a 56 hour work week, excluding extra shifts and mandatory education. Up to $73,092 with experience.
Paramedic’s starting salary is approximately $74,225 annually based on a 56 hour work week, excluding extra shifts and mandatory education. Up to $81,225 with experience.
